Recently, I saw a commercial for Taco Bell that was promoting something called the Fast Food Diet. In a nutshell, a woman spokeswoman was announcing how she lost tremendous amounts of weight by eating food from Taco Bell. You will also notice that she started the commercial with the “cover-our-butt” side note, “my results are not typical”. Why does she start with this? BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT TYPICAL! And diets like these are not healthy. Folks, we need to stop looking to commercials for advice about weight loss!
Why do I feel the need to write this blog post?
Because these “diets” work…they work to achieve their purpose, which is to get people in the door of their restaurants! That is why Jared was on the Subway commercials, and when he started putting the weight back on, they yanked him. You know who else we haven’t seen on a weight loss commercial lately? Kirstie Allen. Why? Because she put the weight back on (and then some) and that just ain’t good for selling weight loss food.
Look, we have to stop looking at weight loss as something that happens in a vacuum. Even if eating Taco Bell could help you lose weight, it won’t be a healthy kind of weight loss. Besides, how long do you think it will be before you sicken of eating from the five or so items that are somewhat low calorie and start choosing the triple beef burrito? I assure you of one thing, if this lady did follow the fast food diet for a while, it wasn’t the only thing she did. She probably is exercising like a fiend, eating other, healthier foods and dealing with other lifestyle issues that caused her to gain the weight in the first place. These commercials just send the wrong message. I am sorry if I sound a bit angered by these petty commercials, but I care about you guys and don’t want to see you go down the wrong path!
