We, and many other weight loss experts, have touted the benefits of drinking water to lose weight. Critics, however, love to point out that there are no clinical studies to prove that drinking water and weight loss were connected. Unfortunately, they were right…until now.
A recent study by researchers at the department of human nutrition, foods and exercise at Virginia Tech has now proven that good old H2O does in fact promote weight loss!
In this study, 48 adults were split into two groups. One group was instructed to drink two glasses of water prior to their meals while the other group was instructed not to. The results were pretty amazing!
The group that drank 2 glasses of water prior to meals ate 75-90 fewer calories at each meal and lost 5 pounds more weight over the 12-week study than those who did not consume water.
Dr. Brenda Davis believes that water fills up the stomach with a 0 calorie substance, which causes you to eat less.
Aside from the benefit to satiety, there is some evidence that drinking water throughout the day can also stimulate metabolism to further promote weight loss. The moral of the study is: “Drink water before meals, drink water between meals, just drink more water!”
